While a Bishop in Poland and summoned to Vatican City, a Politburo overseerer from the USSR in Poland commented to a co-worker, "I hope they make him Pope and he doesn't come back." The other man looked back with a very apprehensive expression and said, "Be careful of what you wish for."
Pope John Paul II was considered very dangerous to the Soviets and it has since been proven they were behind the attempt to kill him.
World Youth Day is also his invention....drawing huge crowds of young people to the Church....and away from the garbage.
It amazes me that as hated as the Catholic Church is and how much people berate and insult John Paul II, that everywhere he traveled....and he traveled everywhere (the most traveled Pope in history) the crowds were always record setting. More people have seen John Paul II than any other human being who ever lived. Observers predicted that no one would show up at an early World Youth Day held in Denver, Colorado. When it came, the crowds nearly overwhelmed the city and stadium... not enough room for the enormous turnout.
